‘Hastings by Candlelight’ – Reflective hologram & mixed media with gold frame – 1690mm x 1380mm
‘Salt‘ follows the previous series ‘Whitewater’ in which he continues to continues to expand upon this theme, in a number of ethereal enigmatic works that call forth a broad range of references from the sea. The works are saturated with colour and design, giving a sense of the Baroque, Asian and Australian feel. All works are derived from the Hastings, Mornington Peninsula area.
Adriano’s new paintings in this body of work continue his exploration with an utterly unique choice of medium and materials (hologram, resin and mixed media) and conceptual strategies that defies easy categorisation. These works represent Gemelli’s rejection of the conventional boundaries between painting, sculpture and drawing. ‘Art is not what you see, it’s what you realise.’
“My aim was to create a configuration of medium and technique that allowed light to filter through so the works would emit a compositional elegance. The paintings are most successful in the multiplicity of views it allows the viewer as they move around the work. Also, the visual tension between the hologram, gold and texture give rise to opulent effects of the material where opacity and translucency, reflections and transparency co-exist.”
